We exist to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Worship includes both praising God and living godly lives. Our times of church fellowship should draw our hearts ‘vertically’, directing us to exalt God. Lives are changed when we encounter God in this way.
(1 Chronicles 15, Psalm 29, Psalm 96)
Walk with Christ
Followers of Jesus continually grow spiritually, becoming more like Jesus. We do that best in community with others – environments that cultivate biblical thinking and encourage a God-honoring life through mutual ministry and accountability with one another. Simply put, we’re better together.
(Ephesians 4:11-16, Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:24)
Work in Christ
A disciple of Christ is a worker in Christ. We need to utilise our gifts and talents not for ourselves, but to advance His kingdom within and outside the church.
(1 Corinthians 12; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; Ephesians 2:8-10)
The foundation that drives our mission.
We proclaim the authority of God’s Word without reservation.
2 Timothy 4:2
We are passionate about what God’s Word says. We believe that the power to change lives is found in the Word of God, and so use expositional preaching, in which the message of the sermon is found solely from the biblical text. We open God’s Word and proclaim its authority.
We lift high the name of Jesus in worship.
God deserves our passionate, fervent adoration. Every facet of our worship lifts high the glory and majesty of Jesus, to inspire a passionate expression of worship to God. Our church is for God and about God.
We believe firmly in the power of prayer.
Behind the scenes each and every week at Vertical Church are many, many hours of prayer – because we depend entirely on God. We believe that fervent, faith-filled, persistent prayer is the priority in every area of our church.
We share the good news of Jesus with boldness.
The gospel changes lives. We boldly share Christ with our friends, neighbours, and co-workers, and equip people to proclaim the truth with confidence in all they do.
Not a church with small groups, but a church of small groups
We pray that Vertical Church will be a community of friends engaged in gospel-centered relationships resembling those of the early Church (Acts 2:42). That’s why we believe it is essential for everyone in Vertical Church to be in a small group. Active participation in a small group is critical for our spiritual health as we grow together in our understanding of God’s word and its application to our lives.
Connecting kids to God’s Word through story
We love that kids are part of Vertical Church. Kids learn best in a fun, safe environment where they are encouraged to listen, ask questions, and explore the Bible in an age-appropriate, spiritually-enriching manner.
We also understand that parenting is challenging. To support parents, we offer ways to extend the Vertical Kids teaching times to daily worship in the home. We desire to partner together with you in nurturing the faith of your children.
What to Expect
New families should expect to be greeted at check-in. We are happy to check your children in, show your family around and help everyone get settled. We’ll ask for the following info: name, date of birth, address, phone number and any special instructions (e.g. allergies). All our volunteers are required to hold valid Working With Children Checks, and are trained and supervised.
Our weekly check-in process is simple and user-friendly. We’ll show you how to use the check-in kiosk and explain how the nametags and parent receipts work.
We love to lift Jesus’ name high in worship – and so do our kids! Children are lead through worship songs, honouring God with their voices and bodies. They may sing, dance, and use hand motions as they enjoy both new and old songs.
CREATIVE BIBLE TEACHING
We believe the Word of God should be taught boldly and correctly to children as well as adults. Each week our teachers open their Bibles and aim to captivate the hearts and imaginations of kids by creatively telling the stories of the best book ever written – the Bible. We use discussions, crafts, role plays and games to help kids connect and apply God’s Word to their lives.
Children engage in small group conversations about what they are learning that week, share prayer requests, apply the Bible to their lives, and play games to memorise scripture.
Lasting change through the gospel
We are passionate about ministering to the hurting in full dependence on the Word of God, the Spirit of God, and the Community of God to experience transforming life change.
Biblical Soul Care is the counselling ministry of Vertical Church. At its most basic, Biblical Soul Care is speaking the truth of the gospel in love. It is intentional and intensive discipleship, building deep, authentic fellowship. This is therefore something we should all do as we are equipped. It is not a new philosophy, but is the practice of living out the ‘one another’ commands found in the Bible.
As such, soul care is practiced from small groups up through to critical situations requiring trained counsellors. We are not licensed counsellors, therapists, psychiatrists or psychologists; we are trained biblical counsellors who guide and counsel through the Bible. We also train volunteers throughout our church, putting into practice our philosophy that soul care is a church-wide endeavour.
Advancing the urgent call of the gospel
People are the mission and time is short: the eternal stakes could not be higher. Therefore, as a church we are passionately committed to gospel outreach. We will seek to advance the gospel through local outreach, global missions, and a commitment from the outset to replication through church planting.
We are partnering with churches and organisations to strategically bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to Melbourne and the World. Current gospel partnerships include:
